CityPlanner Online and Offline updated

CityPlanner has been updated with primarily bug fixes and minor improvements.

Offline bug fixes:

  • Offline shadow control month text not visible
  • Layers set to admin access visible when they should not be. Now layers must be set to access: All to show up in Offline
  • Offline can get stuck with blur filter
  • Portal with no projects breaks in autopilot
  • Offline with Portals and Projects with WMS can freeze
  • Offline can crash after long period of time in autopilot
  • Dialogue category labels gets cut off, line height to small
  • Custom layer and viewpoint button texts in portal projects not shown
  • Attribute window not shown

Offline new features:

  • Offline setting for language. You’ll find it in Settings.exe under Language (Swedish and English)
  • Gzipped A3X background data now works in Offline

To update Offline, just run the sync.exe application and you should get these updates. If you haven’t updated in a very long time, make sure you have a sync application that’s newer than June 2015 – if not, you might have to download the sync application from your account page before updating.

Online bug fixes:

  • Project icons in Portal takes a long time to load.
  • 4D delete all imported projects not working
  • 4D update imported projects makes duplicates
  • Dialogue suggestion panel too wide on small resolutions – should shrink to single column

Online new features:

Project icon in Portal has been updated with a new design for shape and default color and icon.

The project icon color can be changed in:
Portal->General settings->Customize->Design

The inner icon can be customized for each project from the Editor:

New Editor early screenshots

As you might know, we’ve been hard at work the last six months redesigning the Editor from the ground up. We started by surveying our users on how they would like the CityPlanner experience and work flow to be like and also asked them to help us prioritize features. The result of the survey, along with years of experience developing CityPlanner, gave us a list of targeted features and user experience goals.

With the new Editor we want to improve usability, shorten task completion time, support instant previewing for all content, build a modular GUI and backend structure to support adding features without cluttering the interface, and much more.

We want the Editor experience to be much more like a desktop application than a web page with support for common features that you’d expect from any application such as:

  • Undo/Redo
  • Duplicate
  • Select/Multi-select to edit
  • Drag&Drop to add content
  • Powerful and secure collaboration

Here’s a first look at where we’re heading:

Editor is everything

Everything is created in and accessed from the Editor. No more switching between admin pages to find the setting you were looking for. After login, you’re in the editor and you’ll open or create projects from inside the Editor.

Here’s how the Editor is organized. The Editor toolbar is visible for editing users. Each tool icon is a grouping of similar features, such as Viewpoints & Tours.

Edit and Preview simultaneously
Click on content to edit and then preview the change instantly. The Editor will show you what a change will look like straight away without you having to exit the Editor or switch modes.

Object Manager

The object manager helps you organize your content into groups, layers, and objects. It also lets you control which content is accessible to team members and public users. The object manager is the backbone of your project, anything that is related to the project will show up here for easy access and review.

Graphic design tutorial

There are many design elements you can customise in CityPlanner. This is an overview of what you can modify along with tips for making your project look as as good as possible.

  • Vector Graphics

    • The SVG image format is recommended for uploading icons and logos to CityPlanner. SVG is a vector graphics format, which means that as images scale they retain sharpness regardless of screen size or resolution.

    • If you lack vector assets, you can use Vector Magic to automatically convert images from raster formats such as PNG, GIF, and JPG.
    • Inkscape is a free open-source program for Windows and Mac OS which can be used to edit and convert vector formats. Commercial options include Adobe Illustrator and CorelDRAW.
    • Protip: Using vector graphics is extra important for projects published to 4K, Retina, and mobile screens.
  • Masthead

    • The Masthead is the logo or wordmark of your city. It lives in the top left corner of the CityPlanner interface and serves as the chief way to brand your project.

    • Manage the Masthead under General Settings | Design:

    • Protip: When using an image with a transparent background, it is recommended to use a white logo/wordmark with a subtle drop shadow. White stands out best over city models and the drop shadow preserves visibility over light backgrounds such as sky.
    • Recommended image size for the Masthead is less than 200×200px.
  • Ribbon Logos & Icons

    • The Ribbon is the button group which runs along the bottom of the interface.

    • All of the logos and icons can be customised. The leftmost button is the “Logo Button”. By default it features the CityPlanner logo but it is designed to be replaced with your city logo/shield.

    • Upload custom logos and icons on the CityPlanner Admin page, under the General Settings | Ribbon & General Settings | Dialogue tabs:

    • It is recommended to use single colour white icons between 45-55px squared.
  • Typography

    • CityPlanner supports custom typography using the @font-face CSS rule. Click here to learn more about @font-face.
    • There are three fonts groups you can customise – 1) Buttons 2) Headings and 3) Paragraphs:

    • To add custom type to your project, you can link to a remote stylesheet from the CityPlanner Admin page, under General Settings | Design:

    • Protip: You need to upload the stylesheet and font files to your own server.
  • Colour Palette

    • Setting a Theme Colour is one of the key ways of branding your project. It highlights active and hovered interface elements.

    • Set your custom palette on the CityPlanner Admin page, under General Settings | Design:

    • Protip: Be mindful of using very light hues as it can make the white text difficult to read.
  • Default Settings

    • As there are so many ways in which a project can be customised with your civic profile, CityPlanner allows for saving all customisations to the account.

    • When clicking 1) Use As Default everything in the General Settings | Customise section (all tabs) is saved.
    • Protip: You need be an Account Admin to set the default.
    • Future projects henceforth begin with these settings. Previously created projects can be manually updated to the new defaults by opening each project and clicking the 2) Reset button.

Getting started with Form Builder

With Form Builder, you can add your own unique forms to any CityPlanner project or portal. This functionality is part of the Dialogue add-on module and the new Project 2016 interface.

1. Activate Dialogue

  • Start by creating a new project or opening an existing project.
  • Make sure the Project 2016 interface is selected in General settings.
  • Click Dialogue settings.
  • Check Enable Dialogue to activate the module on this project.
  • Click Save and go back to the project page.

2. Build the Form

  • Form Builder lets you build the dialogue form interactively with instant preview.
  • Sections are basically the pages in the form. The sections can have a start view, title and components.
  • You can add, remove and reorder sections by dragging and dropping them.

  • Components are added to a section by dragging them into the section. You can reorder components by dragging and dropping them.
  • After you drag a component to a section, you can edit the component properties.
  • Any component can be set to be mandatory or not to submit the form.

Information

The Information component is used to display instructions or other one-way information to the user.

Question

You can add questions with different reply types such as text area or single line, as well as allowing single option and multiple option answers.

Create toolbox

The Create component adds draw tools to the form. You can customize the names of the tools to best suit your project and choose which ones to include. By default the user can mark positions, draw lines and areas.

Category

  • Drag the Category component to the section you wan to use it in. Categories can only be used once in a form.
  • Categories have a title, color and in future versions an icon.
  • You can set the component to switch to the Marker tool automatically when the user selects a category.

Attachment

You can allow the user to upload and attach files by using the Attachment component.

Text field

The Text Field component is a text area with optional instructions or text used as placeholder. It disappears when the user clicks on the field.  You can set the size of the area to fit the input.

Satisfaction

This component lets you ask questions with smiley faces as answer options. It can be used to ask questions in a more friendly way or in projects targeting a younger audience.

User information

This component lets you configure what you want the respondent to enter about themselves. Field labels can be customized and you can set which fields are mandatory to submit the form.

After Submit settings

  • Here you can edit what is shown to the user after a form has been submitted.
  • Set if you want submissions be published automatically or after admin approval.
  • Submitted forms can automatically be sent in an email to an address you configure. You can also specify a second address which only receives submissions with the Legal Submission checkbox checked.

3. Publish the form

  • Customize the button labels and icons in the General settings->Customize->Dialogue.
  • Set the Form to Published in Form Builder.
  • To moderate submissions, you need to be logged in and open the project view. A button appears when viewing a suggestion which lets you publish or unpublish the submission.

Swedish cities innovate 3D use in Smart City applications

Swedish 3D industry has repeatedly innovated in public use of 3D and in particular in external city planning applications and received several international awards. Now again Swedish cities are involved in projects reinventing the use of 3D city models in promotion of the city and in public participation. Here are some examples:

Creating dialogue in Stockholm City – Last week a digital dialogue was launched for one of the large development projects in Stockholm. In the early phase of the project Norra Djurgårdsstaden the planning department invite citizens to contribute with suggestions and ideas. The dialogue is available to the public as a link on Stockholm city’s home page and use the gigantic (500 Square kilometre) photorealistic 3D city model as background. Engaging citizens in Gothenburg City- The city earlier this year relaunched its award winning citizen portal Min Stad (translated My City). The portal invites citizens to post suggestions for development and improvements of the city. Stockholm Dialogue project showcasing new beta features

The city of Stockholm has launched a public dialogue project, built with the upcoming Form Builder tool. The dialogue form is using new survey components to engage citizens and stakeholders in early dialogue about the public areas in the Kolkajen-Ropsten urban development project.

When taking the survey, the user is guided through the area and asked questions how five public locations should be planned for use. In the survey, the user can choose to add their age, gender and where they live to the submission. There is of course also a 3D model of the planned area and other important information about the project. Users can read other peoples suggestions, indicate if they agree or disagree and share them via Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn or Email.

Ground navigation – Here’s how it works

Fly down to the ground, look out from a window of an existing building or stand on a balcony of a planned building to get the natural first-person perspective has been the most requested feature in CityPlanner. Now you can. We’re happy to  launch CityPlanner ground navigation – available as of right now for all users.

Using ground navigation

  • Enter

    Zoom close to the position you want to “land” in, or double click/tap the position when close to it.

  • Navigate

    Use the mouse or touch to look around. Click or touch tap anywhere to move to a new position.

  • Exit

    Right click or double tap with touch to exit back to overview navigation.

Terrain modification with Shape

For WebGL and Offline, it is now possible to upload a shape file that defines a terrain modification in a layer.

The Shape file

The Shape file has to be defined in the same coordinate system as your background data. The shape can consist of one or several polygons that each can have different height modification settings.
Here’s an example of a shape file that has one polygon and height and color attribute which will be used for the terrain modification.

Project Editor

Create a new layer or modify an existing layer. In “Scenery modification”, click the “Upload shape file” button and select your file.

After upload, you can customize terrain height, surface color and opacity. Terrain height is defined relative from absolute zero altitude. You can type in a value manually for all surfaces or use a value from a linked attribute defined for each surface geometry in the Shape file. Color can be set manually for all surfaces or mapped from a linked attribute per surface.

Note: The terrain modification will not be visible in the Java editor, you have to switch to the webgl project view to see the result.
